On the surface, CBS Films' romantic comedy What If, starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan, could just as easily be titled Friend Zone: The Movie (or, in this case, Harry Potter and the Friend Zone Escape). However, thanks to director Michael Dowse (Goon) and screenwriter Elan Mastai, What If offers a slightly deeper look at male/female friendships and tinkers with familiar tropes just enough to make the film feel unique. And while "friend zoning" is an all-too-common occurrence in everyday life, it's not often the subject of an entire movie, and in that regard What If feels somewhat original.
The story follows Wallace (Radcliffe), a med school dropout who's been repeatedly burned by bad relationships. But it isn't until he decides to put his love life on hold that he meets Chantry (Kazan), an animator who lives with her longtime boyfriend Ben (Rafe Spall). As these things go, Wallace and Chantry form an immediate bond and become close, platonic friends, despite their undeniable romantic chemistry.
