Slow and steady continues to be approach Geoff Johns is taking with his Superman run. Johns isn't seeking to radically reinvent the Man of Steel or shock readers with a massive twist right out of the gate. This third chapter continues Johns' process of slowly easing back into the franchising and establishing Ulysses as the latest addition to Clark's circle of allies. Maybe it's not the most exciting way to kick off a new Superman saga, but it's effective nonetheless.
Anyone who might have been annoyed by issue #33's relative lack of Superman will be glad to know that the Man of Steel is front and center through most of this chapter. I actually found that a bit disappointing. Apart from Lois, very little attention has been paid to the Daily Planet crew in the New 52. It's been nice to see Johns focus as much attention on characters like Jimmy Olsen and Perry White as he has Clark. But on the other hand, there's no reason to assume he won't return to the Planet crew soon enough.
