On paper, The Strain sounds like a white-knuckle ride, filled with suspense, action and memorable gross-out set pieces. And while there have absolutely been moments where it delivers on its promise -- almost always when monsters are involved -- the show still seems to be suffering from growing pains as they figure out how to balance all the different elements at play. “Runaways” is a bit of strange hour in that characters get knocked off while others find their circumstances drastically changed, and yet there's a lack of energy throughout. But despite the continuing stop-and-start rhythms of the show there were also moments of suspense and solid information about the vampires.
