The full name of Nintendo’s well-loved anthropomorphic dinosaur, that everyone casually refers to as Yoshi, is T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas, Console Wars author Blake Harris rediscovered in a decades-old Nintendo Character Guide.
Scans of the official guide, published in 1993, that Harris tweeted out doesn’t reveal what the first initial in Yoshi's name stands for. It does, however, state in lowercase that Mario’s genus is "homo nintendonus."
“Yoshi, properly known as T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas, had been held captive in an egg until Mario (homo nintendonus) bopped along and rescued him. Instantly, the young dinosaur and the plumber became fast friends. Together, they set out to rescue Yoshi’s dinosaur pals from the wickedness of Bowser.”
