As awesome as it is having Arrow on TV, there was a time when DC's live-action prospects weren't so hot. In the pre-Smallville days of the late '90s, all we had was Birds of Prey, that horrific Justice League pilot, and those OnStar commercials featuring Batman and Michael Gough's Alfred. But fresh off introducing the Suicide Squad last week, Arrow gave the Birds of Prey another shot. Unfortunately, I can't say I'm particularly looking forward to a BoP spinoff series at the moment.
I place most of the blame on Huntress. Although she was one of the show's first attempts to branch outside of Green Arrow's corner of the DC Universe, she hasn't really won me over in any of her previous appearances. Jessica De Gouw's performance tends to fall short of the mark whenever she's in Huntress mode, and the character has become increasingly one-note over time. Those flaws were both readily apparent this week. Huntress was too over the top and too hard to connect with this week. Between her single-minded obsession with killing her father and her total willingness to endanger innocent civilians in the process, I just can't see this version of Huntress ever making the transition from vigilante to heroine.
