The Expendables are back for a third helping of testosterone-fuelled celluloid fun. Sylvester Stallone’s homage to 1980s action unites the biggest stars of that decade and allows them to do what they do best, which is shoot guns, throw punches, and break bad guys in two.
However it’s a bit of a challenge reviewing the movies, as the second film is quite like the first. And part three is quite like the pair of them. The cast – predictably – is similar, being made up of the by now familiar action star ensemble of Stallone, Statham, Schwarzenegger and the like.
But unfortunately so is the plot. And the dialogue. And the locations. And despite the best efforts of director Patrick Hughes – who helmed the excellent, criminally under-seen Red Hill – Expendables 3 feels like the continuation of a story that’s starting to look a little tired.
