Imperial #1 Review

STK647622 Superheroes are such a grim and gritty bunch these days, which makes books like Imperial all the more surprising and welcome. More Archer than Man of Steel, Imperial #1 proves to be a silly yet involving tale about a normal guy who receives a not so normal offer.


Writer Steven T. Seagle sets his tone right out of the gate, immediately establishing the book's offbeat voice through his ever talkative lead, Mark McDonnell. With his accented inner musings and his increasingly hilarious word blurts, Mark seems the least likely person to take on the role of Earth's protector. That, of course, makes him the best choice, Seagle mining some great stuff from Mark's interaction with the titular character. Imperial himself is more of a device than a character at this point, but his involvement in the proceedings is no less entertaining. Also great is Mark's bride to be, Seagle giving the character a great humor and heart.
