Halt and Catch Fire’s season finale doesn’t reach the heights of the show’s last couple of episodes, but it’s certainly a satisfactory conclusion to the debut season. “1984” kicks off strong with an amazing opening, showing Gordon’s relationship with Donna bouncing back strong after their blow-up last episode and even better, putting one over on Nick Cardiff to get him and Joe in charge of the company. Their high-five that cuts into the opening credits is, hands-down, the most fist-pump worthy moment in the entire season.
The biggest strength of the finale is that it showed how the trials of the past season has made our characters stronger and more passionate about what they do. With the exception of Joe, our primary characters all showcase a renewed sense of purpose. Cameron founds Mutiny, devoted to pushing the boundaries with like-minded individuals. Gordon has his confidence back and is a man in charge; instead of reveling in the positive reviews for the Giant he asks, “What’s next?” Donna gets herself fired from Texas Instruments and joins Cameron’s motley crew, putting her back on the path to creating something exciting.
