Marvel Studios' sci-fi excursion Guardians of the Galaxy ruled the weekend box office, knocking Lucy down to second place and beating out the similarly retro-infused James Brown biopic Get On Up.
Guardians exceeded box office projections (which estimated a $60 million opening) with a whopping $94 million debut. The Marvel film broke records as the biggest August opening ever, and reigns as the third-largest debut of 2014, behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $95 million and Transformers: Age of Extinction's $100 million openings.
Lucy holds the second place spot with $18.3 million, down from its $44 million debut the previous weekend. Despite the drop, the Scarlett Johansson-led flick has already earned back well over its $40 million budget. The Luc Besson film beat out Get On Up, which made a $14 million debut, less than half of its $30 million production cost.
