Extant jumped in an unexpected direction this week. They didn't focus on showing the details of what happened to Molly and Ethan but instead dove right to the aftermath. While an explanation from Yasumoto or Sparks would have been nice, keeping them out of the way made the conspiracy tone heavier. The thing is, we're already aware there are conspiracies. Heck, even John could be in on it at this point. However, one clever thing about the way they played it was holding the baby reveal until the last few seconds. And hey, it actually looks like a human baby. I didn't see that coming.
Beyond learning that Yasumoto's people extracted the baby and are technologically advanced enough to keep him alive and erase all traces of pregnancy from Molly's body, there were only a couple of other straws to grasp at. It's better than nothing, but a little more payoff for all the build-up would go a long way to making the mystery feel more exciting and less languid. As it stands now, they've taken the physical threat to Molly away by removing the baby. Taking away that dire situation cuts a strong thread of tension, and I'm not sure how they'll replace it or if they can.
