Doctor Who celebrated its 50th birthday in style over the weekend, with feature-length episode “The Day of the Doctor” setting a Guinness World Record. Yet in spite of the special's success, it wasn’t watched by as many people as Strictly Come Dancing in the UK.
The anniversary episode was viewed by an average audience of 10.2m on Saturday night, but the BBC’s dance show beat that number by managing 10.6m.
The episode nevertheless set a world record for the largest ever simulcast of a TV drama, being broadcast in 94 countries, and screening in more than 1,500 cinemas.
“For years the Doctor has been stopping everyone else from conquering the world” said Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat. “Now, just to show off, he’s gone and done it himself!”
