Agents of SHIELD: "Repairs" Review

Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.

First of all… See, May and Ward were totally doing it! There were some who were doubting whether that was what was meant to be inferred by the ending of last week’s episode, but this week we found out that, in fact, their liaisons are an ongoing thing. I continue to greatly enjoy this turn of events and it's worth noting the matter of fact portrayal of this May/December pairing - if you'll pardon the pun. Usually, if there's a notable age gap in a TV show or movie, it's the guy who's older and if it's the reverse, that fact is given a huge spotlight, so it's nice to see it not be the case here.

Going in, I was excited to get an episode focusing on May this week, as I like the character and Ming-Na Wen’s calm and confidant performance. But “Repairs” was frustrating in that it continued SHIELD’s reliance on only kinda/sorta giving us backstory, while making sure every character still has big question marks around what motivates them. Yes, we now know that May “crossed off the enemy force” on a rescue mission and it left her changed and acting remote. But we still don’t know anything about what exactly she did or who she was dealing with – Coulson mentioning a “gifted individual” with followers, or “worshippers,” certainly means we’ll learn more about this person down the line, but why not at least give us a name to chew on? And at the least, if May herself had spoken about what she’d gone through, rather than others, in scenes she wasn’t even in, we could have gotten to truly know her better.
