It's difficult enough, even when talking to friends who share my love of video games, to explain why competitive gaming matters. Trying to explain it to non-gamers is another story entirely, as they're mostly wired to believe that video games are, at best, merely a way to pass the time. It almost always comes back to that ugliest of curse words: real. “Games aren't real,” they're so proud to remind us, which of course means that we aren't permitted to truly care about them. It's an extraordinarily narrow-minded perspective, and one that we often give too much power to when we attempt to justify our level of engagement in pragmatic terms when the real answers lie deeper.
