Manhattan: "You Always Hurt the One You Love" Review

Using up one of the most interesting premises for a television show that there could possibly be, it’s almost as much of an achievement for a show about the Manhattan Project to be so terribly boring as it is for the atomic bomb to even exist.


While the show is beautifully shot with great costuming and a lovely soundtrack, it’s laced with trite dialogue and bland characters that do little but champion clichés. Led by Ashley Zukerman’s Charlie, our POV scientist character led to a small town that technically doesn’t exist, we’re introduced to the world of Manhattan. It’s creepy in that we know they’re building the most destructive force the world has ever seen while the wives of these great minds go about their lives as though their situation is totally normal. From the perspective of Charlie and his family it’s certainly odd, but the show does little to capitalize on this in its debut. I enjoyed the Stepford Wives-style vibe that Manhattan delivers in this respect, but it certainly isn’t enough to keep me coming back.
