The Leftovers: "Penguin One, Us Zero" Review

The battle for the modern human soul continued this week on The Leftovers with "Penguin One, Us Zero." Which saw a deepening of some individual character stories while also acting as a sort of a litmus test for which stories are doing the best job of resonating. The Guilty Remnants, who claim not to be a cult, remained a big focus this week as Meg - living in a "pledge house" - began her indoctrination with Laurie. Which involved the painstaking endeavor of chopping down a large tree with an axe.


Despite whatever reasons the GRs don't see themselves as a cult, they exhibit all the telltale signs of cult activity. Number one being their insistence on recruitment, as Kevin has become all-too familiar with. Another indicator that the GRs seem oblivious to is the fact that they're a hostile group. Passively hostile, yes, but their actions are meant to provoke strong negative, sometimes violent, feelings in others. And with a mission statement about making other people "remember" the departure event, they're seeking out those who've become detached and disillusioned with existence. Taking advantage of the world-wide outbreak of apathy and depression.
