Emmy award-winning comedian and former SNL writer John Mulaney is ready for your inevitable Seinfeld comparisons to his upcoming sitcom, Mulaney. "You mean backlash?" were his exact words to me when we spoke last month at the ATX Television Festival in Austin. "I chose to play stand-up on the show. Knowing full well that people will compare us to Seinfeld. Which is like the best half-hour comedy ever. I love it. I won't pretend it's not a huge influence. But I didn't want to, you know, play an architect on the show to avoid a comparison to Seinfeld. I wanted to be a stand-up. And if we manage to be one percent as good as Seinfeld, I'll feel very lucky. I hope nobody thinks that I think we've already achieved the heights of Seinfeld."
