Note: Full spoilers for the 24: Live Another Day finale follow.
Wrapping up its shortest season -- and, not coincidentally, one of its strongest -- 24: Live Another Day finishes with an episode that’s at times exciting, emotional, cathartic and just plain cool. Nobody gets a happy ending this time around, just variations on misery. Except for the world at large. World at large? Big winners today. Hooray for no war! Oh, and Erik wound up with a promotion, so that’s nice for him. But other than that? Hoo, boy.
First and foremost is Jack, now in custody of the Russians for his last rage attack back in season 8. 24 is very good about not letting loose threads dangle, and this is an ending that seemed virtually inevitable from the moment Stolnavich and Boudreau started hatching plots. So yes, Jack’s a prisoner and the table’s already set for a possible Day 10, but it’s a redemptive moment rather than a downbeat, hopeless one. Jack and Chloe’s brief meeting as they’re halfway through the transfer was my favorite moment in an hour that didn’t lack for great ones.
