Let’s get one thing straight from the start: I’m an unabashed old-school Rainbow Six fanboy. I loved the tactical planning in the original PC version from 1998. I loved the slow, plodding, calculated movement. I loved the tension knowing every shot was potentially the last. It was one of the first shooters where I felt like being the quickest or twitchiest player wasn’t a big factor for success. Sound tactics and careful planning is what really mattered -- Rainbow Six was the thinking gamer’s shooter.
Heck, I was even a fan of the console versions when the series made the transition a few years later. In my 16 years at IGN, it’s been one of the most-played multiplayer series of all time here, and there was rarely a week that went by for a couple of years where we didn’t get together and play. That’s why I was both surprised and excited when Ubisoft announced Rainbow Six: Siege at their press conference yesterday. And after playing three rounds of Siege, I’m happy to report that it’s already bubbling up a lot of those old memories I have of my beloved R6.
