Sexual tension, teenage angst and bad acid does not a good mix make – Deadly Class’ first arc comes to its explosive conclusion, buoyed yet again by the stellar creative team of Rick Remender and Wes Craig.
Issue #6 picks up right where we left off, Marcus getting the ever living you-know-what kicked out of him by the jealous Chico. Following Marcus’ surreally entertaining acid trip, all sense of fun flies right out the window, the events of this issue almost disturbingly real. Chico’s testosterone fueled chest-thumping quickly devolves into full on murderous rage, resulting in a uniquely riveting confrontation between him and his fellow classmates. Remender absolutely nails this sequence, subtly reminding the reader that beneath their hardened exteriors and assassin training is a scared bunch of kids, banded together by a singular purpose. The inevitable fallout proves tough for all involved, but the epilogue ends on an almost reflective note. Remender has often mentioned his own history as inspiration for the misadventures of Marcus and Co., and while it’s safe to assume that much of the book is still fiction (we hope) there’s a definite lived in quality to Marcus’ eventual revelation.
