Playing the Orcs Must Die! Unchained beta gave us a great taste of how it’s carrying over the tower-defense inspired design and colorful personality of its single-player and co-op predecessors. It’s creating a distinctive style as it transitions to competitive multiplayer.
The biggest thing to notice is that, unlike a typical MOBA, the minions here never meet head-on in a big fray. Offense and defense have separate lanes, so every time a new wave emerges, you’ve got to decide whether you’re going to help them fight through the enemy’s traps and heroes to score a point on the other side, or try to keep the enemy out of yours with your own traps and defenses. It creates a very different back-and-forth pacing that can get very competitive.
