Beauty is hard to come by in American animation. With the traditional 2D style — known for painterly backgrounds and artisanal character performances — diminishing over the last decade, CG animation has shepherded in an era of the hyper-real — or merely sufficient, depending on the target age range. Animated features hire big name cinematographers to come in and make fantastic worlds look exactly like our own. Physics matter. Believability is considered. CG cartoons still have lovable characters, whimsy, and buffoonery, but more often than not, the animated dressing is more of a marketable shell than an exploding expression of imagination.
This October's The Book of Life hopes to steer 3D animation back towards its artistic roots and without sacrificing any of the fun. At a special preview event, El Tigre and MAD animator Jorge R. Gutierrez presented introductory footage from his feature debut, a vivid, musical, Mexican adventure film produced by fantasy connoisseur Guillermo del Toro.
