Valiant Hearts and the Beauty of History in Games

Virtually everybody my age remembers sitting in sprawling computer labs full of Apple IIs playing The Oregon Trail. MECC's classic put players in the role of a westward-bound crew of intrepid travelers, and it forced gamers to make tough choices. What would your profession be? How much money would you head towards the Pacific with, and how would you spend it? How would you deal with the litany of rivers and other obstacles in your way? Would you hunt for food, or bring it along from far-flung outposts? (And perhaps most importantly, what kind of messed up stuff would you put on the tombstones of your fallen comrades?)
