Mood Indigo Review

Visionary director Michel Gondry is back to his surrealistic romantic/fantasy ways, this time with Mood Indigo – named after the Duke Ellington album but based on Boris Vian’s 1947 book Froth on the Daydream.


Colin (Romain Duris), a man born rich that’s never worked a day in his life, falls in love with Chloe (Audrey Tautou) and they get married, only for the couple to find that Chloe has a rare disease in which a water lily is growing inside of her lung. Meanwhile, Colin’s friend Chick’s (Gad Elmaleh) relationship with his newfound lover Alise (Aissa Maiga) struggles to stay above water. It’s a simple setup, but it’s Gondry’s visual flair and use of fantastical imagery that keeps Mood Indigo alive.
