LEGO is moving into the space occupied by Skylanders, Disney Infinity and Nintendo's Amiibos with LEGO Fusion, an app that scans real-world LEGO creations into a video game world.
With certain kits, which are aptly called LEGO Fusion boxes, players can use their tablets or smart phones to scan buildings, vehicles and more into a virtual environment. The app features missions, challenges, mini-games and in-game rewards, and is free with any LEGO Fusion kit.
The ever-growing space that LEGO Fusion is moving into has proven lucrative –– earlier this year, Activision announced the Skylanders franchise had crossed the $2 billion threshold in sales, with 175 million toys sold since 2011. Disney Infinity is also capitalizing on well known properties by adding Marvel characters to the game's 2.0 update.
