If you’re looking for nearly two hours of uninspired and trite medieval drama, Ironclad: Battle for Blood is perfect. On a quest to defend his castle, young Hubert (Tom Rhys Harries) gathers a group of mercenaries – including his cousin Guy (Tom Austen), a haunted warrior – to protect his home. And that’s the extent of the film; a paper thin plot splattered with fake blood. There are plenty of attempts at creating characters we care about and to depict scenes of exhilarating action laced with shock value, but the attempts fail at every single turn.
Battle for Blood feels like an amateur medieval reenactment captured on camera by freshman film students and strung together with a loose narrative that does little more than give an excuse to tie the battles together. Unfortunately, even the action feels low-budget, relying on excessive shaky cam and rapid fire edits to mask the fact that the choreography is bland and the effects cheap.
