Full spoilers for the episode to follow.
As we enter the back half of Halt and Catch Fire’s debut season, “Landfall” takes great strides to grow the BS-heavy Joe MacMillan beyond a soulless yuppie in an expensive suit. We’ve gotten hints of his dark side and certainly his manipulative side, but finally we get to see him be a real human being and genuinely connect with another person.
“Landfall” finds Cameron deciding that the operating system should have a personality to interact with its user – similar to the Adventure text-based game the office enjoyed last episode – and causes friction in the Cardiff offices when she brings it up. Meanwhile, Gordon tries to find a Cabbage Patch doll for his daughter while dealing with the stress of potentially having to make a change to the machine pending Joe’s decision on changing the OS.
