Levels in the next great Mario game aren't being made by Nintendo. The stages are being made by us.
During a demo at Nintendo’s E3 2014 booth, I played Mario Maker, an “interactive course builder” set in the Mario universe and reminiscent of their classic art studio, Mario Paint. By using the Wii U stylus and dragging and dropping classic Mario tiles, items and enemies in to the stage, I was able to create a Super Mario Bros. level from scratch. It wasn’t a very good one, I’ll admit. It was just a start. I stacked some brick block in a funny looking staircase and surrounded it with angry goombas and green pipes that I stretched and shrunk until they looked fun enough. Then I immediately started playing my new creation, died, and jumped back to the creator mode to move some stuff around. It was fast and seamless. And most importantly, it was inspiring.
