I’ve been reflecting a lot on two of my favorite things in life: the Marvel Studios movies and Pokemon games. Both are beloved properties that only seem to get better with age. Every time a new one comes around, the addiction takes hold and it must be immediately consumed -- like pizza! But what makes the Avengers movies and Pokemon games so great? What’s the Chemical X to their Powerpuff Girls? They make connections.
As anyone who has played a Pokemon game knows, they thrive on backwards compatibility. When you fire up a new one, not only do you often see characters, places, and Pokemon from previous games, but you can import your old Pokes into the new game. This is not only convenient and fun, but it makes all of the games feel intimately connected. You get the sense you’re living in a bigger world.
