Fault in Our Stars Defeats Edge of Tomorrow

The young-adult adaptation The Fault in Our Stars starring Shailene Woodley opened big at the box office this weekend, pulling in an estimated $48.2 million.


That take easily trumped Tom Cruise’s well-reviewed sci-fi war film Edge of Tomorrow, which placed third in its debut weekend with $29.1 million. Last week's top-earner, Angelina Jolie's Maleficent, held on to the number two slot with some $33.5 million.


Meanwhile, X-Men: Days of Future Past took in an additional $14.7 million, bringing its cumulative domestic total to date to $189 million. With $420 million in foreign grosses, the film has proven to be a strong return to form for Fox's mutants.
