Given the sheer number of military-themed games on the market, it’s astounding to think how few of them ask you to think about the effects of war. The games industry is constantly aping Hollywood and yet, while the most memorable and successful war movies are the ones that leave you considering the nature of - to coin a phrase from Alan Partridge - ‘man’s inhumanity to man’, games are lagging well behind in terms of such meaningful commentaries.
As movies and books continue to expertly tackle sombre events - invasions, the atrocities within death camps and other cruelties - most war video games simply focus on the heat of conflict. They throw you into the shoes of the ‘ultimate soldier’ with the sole aim of bagging sweet kills against armies of unwavering evil.
