What It's Like to Play Smash Bros. 3DS

My first hands on session with Smash Bros. for 3DS immediately cast aside many doubts I had for the portable installment. I can recall mixed excitement when the 3DS version was announced last year, mostly because I was baffled whether or not Nintendo could make it work. The action in a Smash Bros. match moves at an intense speed (well, at least if you're still playing Melee like me). Video of the 3DS version slowly calmed some of my concerns, but I wondered if a player could get lost in a pile of items, assist trophies, and Pokemon on smaller screen? Could the 3DS really handle such a fast-paced action game without a hitch?


The short answer is yes, it can. Nintendo's fun party brawler looks impressive on a 3DS XL. During my brief hands-on time, I couldn't help but admire its colorful, cell-shaded graphical style. The dark outlines surrounding each character did well to separate my character from the equally vibrant backgrounds. And the swift 60 frames-per-second animation speeds didn't skip a beat, whether I played Smash Run -- an alternative mode where players run around a huge map and defeat enemies to beef up individual stats -- or a standard four-player brawl against three A.I. controlled opponents. I did discover one tiny flaw in Smash Bros. though: Whenever the fight zoomed out, it became difficult to keep up with what was going on. I eventually gained my bearing after a few bumbling trips through the air (and possibly off the ledge).
