Full spoilers for the episode to follow.
Halt and Catch Fire continues on strong with its second episode, aptly titled “FUD.” If the premiere was all about a sense of discovery and opportunity, “FUD” – fear, uncertainty, and doubt – is about the reality of attempting to start a revolution. With IBM’s lawyers invading Cardiff Electric, the livelihood of the entire company and all of its employees are placed upon the shoulders of Joe, Gordon, and Cameron.
“FUD” manages to up the stakes beyond just the lives of our three protagonists. Already, we’re seeing their enterprising ways –manufactured by Joe’s cocksure charisma – affect everyone around them.
This second episode works as a stellar counterpart to the premiere; it’s easy to get invested in a group of underdogs setting out to do the impossible, but when the stakes are the lives of an entire workforce – especially when we live in an era of being disposable worker bees – the tension is far greater. To this end, “FUD” is a great installment that sets up the long term, far-reaching ramifications of what it could mean if Joe’s plan fails.
