Of the many larger than life characters operating within the Invincible Universe, few are as solo ready as the alien armored Tech Jacket. He's got the look--Ash Ketchum meets Iron Man--the origin--human boy granted alien exoskeleton, digs it--and the pedigree--Kirkman--to succeed in his own series, yet it took some time in the digital realm to make it a reality. Fresh off their successful digital run, collaborators Joe Keatinge and Khary Randolph return Zach Thompson to the world of print, offering a promising debut that never fully takes flight.
From the story's opening, fated moment, it's clear that Joe Keatinge has a strong grasp of the character and his world. He immediately taps into Zach's sense of wonder, imbuing the character with a youthful exuberance that readily reflects a teenage boy brimming with awesome power. Sure, he has a suit of armor he can never take off, but when said armor can carry you to the moon and back life doesn't seem too bad. Keatinge's script is enjoyable, if not standard, super-fare, offering glimpses into both Zach's civilian and professional life. Fans of the character will quickly get up to speed, whilst newer readers may find the lack of backstory a bit difficult. It's not that Keatinge needs to spell everything out, as the first chunk of the story flows just fine without, but once other relationships are explored and new threats revealed, the learning curve ups sharply.
