FremantleMedia North America is announcing the acquisition of the television rights to Neil Gaiman’s critically acclaimed fantasy novel American Gods. HBO had previously been associated with a serial adaptation of the book.
Gaiman, perhaps best known for his landmark comic book Sandman, published American Gods in 2001. The following year it would win the Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker awards for best novel. The story centers on Shadow Moon, a modern day ex-con who finds himself in the employ of a mysterious stranger named Mr. Wednesday. As his “work” for Wednesday progresses, Shadow comes to realize he’s a pawn in a global war between the gods of old and a new pantheon fueled by human desires.
