Justified: "Raw Deal" Review

Warning: Full Spoilers Ahead!


OK, here. This episode is where we can look at Justified and say "a return to form" and actually mean it.


A respite from all of the wandering serial plots, "Raw Deal" was a well-done episodic plot and it was a welcome relief from what's been going on. Instead of filling the screen time with Orange is the New Harlan material, we got a contained story about a guy stealing money through a scam gambling site (with a nice lead-in from Raylan's new morning walk-ins duty). And whereas most episodes would've followed the brute with the gun, "Raw Deal" followed the clever IT guy as he ran and got away with the money for a little bit. His backstory was neat and and tidy and interesting. These were the kinds of characters Justified used to indulge in, if only for an episode, and have seemingly faded this season. "Raw Deal" also reminded us that Raylan is pretty good at what he does, but he's behind the times and probably always will be. While a joke about Raylan wondering if he can comment on an internet post comes off as a cute throwaway, it lent a deeper meaning of Raylan's dinosaur ways--and lends credence to how he'll never actually change, one of the bigger issues of this season and next.
