Mixology Review

Premiering Wednesday night on ABC, Mixology is a new high-concept sitcom from The Hangover writers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. That concept is stated right at the top of the show in a voice over that runs throughout the episode: "This is the story of ten strangers, one night and all the ridiculous things we do to find love." So if nothing else, Mixology will have the biggest storytelling hoops to jump through for a sitcom since How I Met Your Mother, with its 24-like format of an entire season taking place in one night. It's also got a sweeter tone than you might expect from The Hangover writers and most of the action taking place a in a meat market club.


The premiere episode, "Tom & Maya", smartly doesn't try cramming detailed introductions of all ten characters into the first episode - instead it focuses on the title two and a few others. Tom's (Blake Lee) a too-sweet nice guy who's just been dumped and his buddies are trying to jump-start his dating life while Maya's (Ginger Gonzaga) his polar opposite: a too-tough mean girl. We get their backgrounds in extended flashbacks with Tom's friend Bruce (Andrew Santino) providing the narration, a device that can get old fast but the writers already have a good handle on using it just enough to give us context and let the scenes play out.
