Lately, Marvel's approach to annual issues has been to offer an oversized and completely standalone tale that only loosely builds on current continuity. Iron Man Annual #1 very much flies in the face of that. This issue features multiple story segments, all heavily steeped in Kieron Gillen's previous work. It's certainly not an ideal place for newcomers to dive into the series. But even seasoned readers may be put off by this issue's scatterbrained focus and the way these stories seem more intended to check off various boxes and set the stage for the next leg of Gillen's run than merely entertain.
