The Giver Review

The Giver, based on Lois Lowry's Newbery-winning novel, is frankly a little late to the YA party, having arrived after similar movies such as Divergent, The Hunger Games, Percy Jackson and Harry Potter. (It's worth nothing that Lowry's book was published in 1993, well before any of those other books came out.) Indeed, the "Sameness" that plagues the dystopian citizens of The Giver may also be the thing that keeps the movie from resonating with audiences.


Nevertheless, director Phillip Noyce (Salt, The Bone Collector) has made pretty good use of the source material here and has done so in a visually dynamic way, which definitely gives it a leg up in some respects.
