Note: Spoilers for the entire first season of The Blacklist follow.
The Blacklist arrived on NBC last year with a nifty hook: a spy comes in from the cold and he’s looking to burn some bad guys! Even better, the spy was played by James Spader, an actor who can do most anything other than be uninteresting. Luckily for the network the show has been a desperately needed hit and they’ll be coming back with another season in the fall, but with the first season just wrapped up, let’s take a look back and see how it fared.
First, the bad news: beyond Spader, most of the show was shaky. When Red wasn’t around we were left with drawn-out mysteries (yes, Lizzie, your husband’s obviously a bad guy from early on, but it’s gonna take FOREVER to get there), vague conspiracies, and a task force that never made much of an impression. Spader’s a magnetic performer, but when surrounded by nothing but straight men almost any personality is going to stand out. Red was going to be the standout regardless, but when you’re virtually the only character with a pulse (aside from the villains), well… you can’t call it scene-stealing if they’re just giving it to you.
