With Forever Evil finally over, DC can close the door on Nightwing and this era of Dick Grayson's career. Unfortunately, anyone hoping for one last, epic finale to Kyle Higgins' run will be disappointed. Higgins himself is not involved. This is more Grayson #0 than Nightwing #30, setting up Dick's new role as a double agent in Spyral and his ongoing relationship (or lack thereof) with the rest of the Bat family. All that being taken into account, this isn't a bad primer for the new series, though the middle chapter is far weaker than the other two.
Co-writers Tim Seeley and Tim King divide this slightly oversized issue into three separate but connected stories. The first revolves around Dr. Leslie Tomkins (predictably de-aged for the New 52) and her encounter with the clandestine Spyral organization. The second is a greatly expanded version of the brief scene from Forever Evil #7 where Bruce charges Dick with his new mission. The final chapter offers a clearer taste of what the new series has to offer, showcasing Dick Grayson as a globe-trotting super-spy with an unexpected new partner.
