A bad game can hurt a franchise. Several bad games can kill it. Once a series dies, it’s sadly almost always gone forever - we’re still mourning the loss of Ultima, Suikoden, Legacy of Kain, and plenty more.
And yet, there is always hope. Every once in a while a deftly-handled marketing campaign or especially adept development team is able to perform the near-impossible and bring a game franchise back from the dead. Below are 9 examples of game franchises that gained an extra life and came back strong.
Before Doom, there was Wolfenstein 3D. id Software defined the future of first-person shooters with the original game’s release 22 years ago. There have been plenty of notable installments since, like 2002’s Return to Castle Wolfenstein - but the last decade has been less kind to the series.
