Note: full spoilers for Season 3 follow.
Season 3 of Once Upon a Time was split into two distinct halves. For the first 11 episodes, the show took place in Neverland while the Storybrooke gang tried to get Henry back. Then after Peter Pan was defeated, the gang battled the Wicked Witch in the last 11episodes. It was a weird approach, but the format gave characters different endgames and that kept the season interesting.
That said, the Neverland arc dragged on far too long. Watching the Storybrooke heroes tramp around the jungle got boring. However, the time spent hunting Peter Pan gave them a chance to develop and to grow together. We learned that Hook's interactions with Emma were more than innocent flirtations, and we saw him continue to change. He assisted Charming with no real ulterior motives and was honest with Emma about Neal. Colin O'Donoghue got more to do this season, and he delivered across the board.
