Justice League United #1 Review

Justice League United #1 is the second comic DC has released this month that has no business being billed as a first issue. It's no more or less than the second chapter of a five-issue story arc that began in Justice League United #0 last month. Assuming you've read that issue, JLU #1 offers more of the same. It has its clear strengths as a more fun, adventurous alternative to the other Justice League comics to debut in the New 52. But this second chapter does little to address the flaws found in issue #0 either.


If nothing else, Jeff Lemire deserves credit for refusing to drag fans through another typical, slow, plodding start to a superhero team book full of setup and exposition. This series isn't particularly concerned with justifying why this new team has been brought together. These heroes just happen to be in the right place (Canada) at the right time to band together and battle a new interstellar nemesis. Lemire has launched right into the action with these first two issues. And considering that it was barely a year ago that we just got a new Justice League comic that was very preoccupied with setup and justifying each member on the roster, this is a nice change of pace.
