Nymphomaniac Review

It's important to provide the most essential fact about Nymphomaniac right off the bat: it is not Lars von Trier’s attempt to be even more provocative than usual. And this is OK. Despite what you might have heard, you’ll find more explicit scenes a quick Google away. If you're imagining an orgiastic rampage of hardcore sexual acts the like of which mainstream cinema has never seen, you may be surprised to learn that the sex is not the crux.


What is important about those scenes, though, is the volume and variety of them. It's why this 'short' version of the film - split into two parts and released separately save for one or two special screenings - runs to about four hours. It's why von Trier's director's cut runs even longer. This is a full and complete sexual history of one woman's struggle with lust. But the story is the struggle, not the lust.
