Whereas the original 1981 version of Endless Love basked in melodrama of the most bizarre order (bohemian attitudes, parents vicariously living through their sexually-active teens, mental hospitals, Tom Cruise, and handfuls of sleeping pills), writer-director Shana Feste's remake opts for absolute seriousness. Which makes it funny as hell. The modernized story of young love is like the shell of a great spoof movie — imagine Airplane! without the punchlines. Intentional? Probably not, but Feste's cast delivers the dialogue — a combination of Valentine's Day heart candy one-liners and selections of 8th grade love poetry — without absolute conviction. If only genuine Nicholas Sparks adaptations could derail as gloriously as Endless Love.
