Black Sails: "V." Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...


For all intents and purposes, the characters on Black Sails are still "landlocked," in the sense that they have to eventually return to New Providence before they can officially take off on the real high seas hunt. But that didn't stop "V.," involving Flint's exciting side attempt to capture the guns off of Captain Bryson's ship, from being the most gripping episode of the series so far.


Sure, there was a "B" plot involving the usual rotating door of storylines back on the island and an angry mob at Eleanor's doorstep, but the ocean chase and subsequent ship battle represented the grandest, most intense set piece the show has done so far. From Flint risking breaking his mast by raising up all his sails in order to gain speed, to Dufresne's harrowing first time "over the side," to the disturbing discovery of Bryson's human cargo - it all escalated nicely, giving us a smorgasbord of pirate violence.
