The Making of Return of the Jedi Review

J.W. Rinzler’s two previous “Making Of” books for Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back were incredibly informative, detailed and entertaining and so there was no reason to think The Making of Return of the Jedi – which was released last month – would be any less so.


That being said, Rinzler himself offers some words of seeming caution at the top of the book, noting this installment had one big difference from the other two – a lack of archival interviews. The first two books were primarily culled from in-depth interviews done at the time of production, offering a wonderful look into the mindset of the people making the Star Wars movies as they were making them, rather than people looking back three decades later. However, in this case, Rinzler says that despite Jedi being the most recent of the films he covered, there simply wasn’t as much material of that sort, outside lengthy interviews conducted with director Richard Marquand and producer Howard Kananjian before the film opened.
