The final entry in the list contains a slight spoiler for a two hundred year old legend. Your call.
Simply... a Ronin is a samurai without a leader.
But the 47 Ronin refers to a story known throughout Japan. Although it's treated with the reverence befitting a myth or legend, it's actually a real story, based on events that took place at the start of the 18th century. It tells of a group of samurai who avenge the memory of their fallen leader, in an attempt to snatch back his honour, before committing suicide according to the ancient samurai code of Bushidō. It's even celebrated as a public holiday in Japan, and has been reenacted countless times on film and television over the years, passing into popular myth.
