So What If Wolverine is Going to Die?

When the death of Wolverine was announced last month, fans reacted with comments like “Who cares? He’ll come back.” and “Death doesn’t matter in comics, it never sticks.” Those people are half right -- comic book characters have a knack for not staying dead. But to say that death in comics is not worth caring about just because the character will most likely return misses the whole point. For comic book characters, death is a grand performance.


You probably know your favorite comic book characters on an intimate level, maybe better than you know some of your actual friends. You know that Spider-Man was raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben, that Superman has a dog named Krypto, and that the Martian Manhunter loves Chocos cookies. So really, you should treat superheroes like you would one of your best friends. But what does this have to do with the importance of comic book hero deaths? I’m getting there, so bear with me.
