Silicon Valley: "Proof of Concept" Review

In the penultimate episode of its debut season, Silicon Valley benefits from a change of scenery that helps shake up the formula of the show quite a bit. “Proof of Concept” finds the guys at TechCrunch Disrupt, the start-up competition that they’ve been struggling to finish the demo presentation for. Complicated by Erlich’s extramarital affairs with one of the judge’s wives, Richard and the others try to pick up the pace and make a good first impression.


Despite the change of location, “Proof of Concept” still fails to find the right balance between humorous awkwardness and straight-up ineptitude when it comes to Richard, who struggles to focus on the presentation due to an obsession with an old flame suddenly rearing its head. At this point it feels like Richard doesn’t really want the glory of a successful start-up, or at least doesn’t want to work for it – an idea that could very well pay off in the season finale – and instead sets himself up to fail or get distracted. His creepy obsession with this woman does give plenty of laughs, but at the expense of keeping Richard’s character generally likable and competent.
